The project is an extension of an existing research program that is part of the University of Calgary multidisciplinary Hydraulic Fracturing Initiative in identifying and addressing the regulatory challenges for re-using produced water and flowback in Alberta.

Policy Issue
Assessment of alternative sources and handling of water for unconventional oil and gas development, considering the entire life cycle.

Knowledge Gap
Identify regulatory and operational challenges of reusing produced water and flowback in Alberta (e.g., reclassifying produced water and flowback as a resource instead of a waste).

2015 Final Report
