Identifying all Sources of Benzene at UOG Sites/Facilities

A screening-level assessment of benzene emissions from secondary sources in the upstream oil and natural gas (UOG) industry has been conducted. The focus has been on venting, fugitive and combustion sources. The primary source of benzene emissions in the UOG industry is venting by glycol dehydrators; their contributions are already well known through existing mandatory reporting initiatives and therefore are excluded from the assessment.

In Alberta, benzene emissions from glycol dehydrators are estimated, controlled and regulated by ERCB Directive 039. The requirements need to be expanded to meet the intent of ERCB Directive 060 which implies that all benzene sources must meet the site emission limits in ERCB Directive 039.
