Evaluation of Surface Casing Vent Flows at Inactive Wells: Database Analysis and Field Measurements in Alberta

Mary Kang, McGill University

20-ARPC-10

The purpose of this project is to:

1) Characterize methane emission rates from inactive wells over time and geographical location.

2) Determine geochemical composition that can elucidate the source of the gases released.

3) Compare emissions of inactive wells in Canada to a wider data set of inactive/abandoned wells measured to date in Canada, the U.S., and globally.

4) Develop a database and analysis framework that can be used to design cost-effective mitigation strategies.

Estimated date of completion: December 2023
