2010 Plant Species at Risk Responses to Shallow Gas Development

Susan Patey LeDrew, Encana Corporation

The research will investigate whether existing acute and chronic shallow gas field disturbances have positive, benign or negative effects on the presence of disturbance adapted SAR plants over time and how far these effects extend beyond the project footprint. The study site will be located in areas of existing shallow gas infrastructure with known occurrences of tiny cryptanthe and sand verbena near the South Saskatchewan River north of Medicine Hat. The results will provide evidence from native prairie ecosystems to help assess the validity of the 300m year round industry set back from SAR plants.
