Test Methodology and Toxicity Study for Boron

The Alberta Environment soil quality guideline for boron is 2 mg/kg using a hot water soluble analytical technique.  This guideline has limited use for assessing impacts at contaminated sites and may be unnecessarily conservative.  Preliminary work completed by Equilibrium has determine higher concentrations can be tolerated by a number of plant species, which should be incorporated into guideline development.  Alberta Environment has indicated laboratory testing work using Environment Canada protocols would be acceptable for redeveloping a guideline.  The purpose of the proposal would be to complete the toxicity testing work and develop a guideline following regulatory protocols.
